Carrington Street, Nottingham

Carrington Street in Nottingham is ideally located in Nottingham City Centre close to the Broadmarsh development and the train station. The clients (Bhatia Best) aim was to turn this old bank building into 8 apartments for local professionals. The architect allocated to the project was DL Design Studio and we worked with them to find the best way to integrate our electrical and mechanical services into the tight layout spread over the first and second floors. On the ground floor there is a retail unit which restricted the space available for drainage and other services.

We surveyed the exiting building to ascertain existing supply capabilities before recommending water and electrical power distribution routes and a particularly difficult ventilation strategy, given that we couldn’t exhaust flue gas or exhaust air out of the front or side elevations. However, a succession of meetings meant that we could provide a detailed design that was efficient and effective for each apartment.

A careful study of the ground floor drainage and liaison with the retail unit manager enabled us to provide a drainage design that has minimal impact on their trading time or space as most downpipes passed through back-of-house areas.

Each apartment has a small gas boiler, radiators and a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit. Electrical power, gas and water are all metered and distributed to each apartment, along with TV and telephone connections. In the basement a pressurisation pump set provides boosted cold water, whilst the whole building is protected by a fire and access control system.

Having completed the energy assessments the design met all the Part L Building Regulations requirements and was produced on time ready for the tender period to start. Through this and the installation phase we provided technical advise where needed, this included the Clerk of Works role monitoring the installation quality and project progress through inspection reports.

The project is now complete with tenants ready to move in.
