BEM Services were contacted by Korean Foods Ltd to assist them with the detailed design of a two-storey food supermarket located on Charing Cross Road, London. The architect had provided a good quality preliminary design, greatly helping our work, and we were also provided with access to a 3D scan via Matterport which enabled us to view the site from our offices.
Following our initial site visit we liaised with the selected fridge and freezer manufacturers to get the required technical information to aid our design. We had to work within the building owner’s parameters including items such as noise levels, space available within the main plantroom and connections to the building fire alarm system.
The shop was to provide general food shopping plus some fresh cooked takeaway foods so the basement level was designed as a kitchen and food preparation area, this lead to difficult ventilation requirements to remove the moisture in this area but through careful co-ordination with the architect we specified a small riser enabling the air to be circulated and exhausted on the first floor.
The other key area was noise and air conditioning plant. We were required to meet the Westminster Local Authority Noise specifications and therefore had to liaise with the selected air conditioning manufacturer to obtain and check the noise levels. We had to consider attenuation at one stage but through careful design we were able to negate the need for these.
The final output was a number of layout drawings showing all of the electrical and mechanical equipment, water distribution systems and further detailed drawings of the kitchen food preparation area. These were supported by a full specification detailing the installation standards to be met and the testing requirements once installed. This gave the client confidence that he was going to get a good and fully operational installation.
