BEM Services were contacted by NMS Infrastructure to assist them with design and delivery of IT data systems for five hospitals in Zambia. This followed the dismissal of a previous company. This very specialist project requires the design of IT data systems for five 80 bed hospitals across Zambia followed by the delivery of the hardware and software to provide a fully functioning system prior to handover to the Zambian Ministry of Health. It is expected that the delivery of the five hospitals will take 2 years.
NMS Infrastructure are working to a BIM Level 2 design using AutoCAD Revit to provide 3D models. The project will require telephones, printers, servers, internet connections, data points and Wi-Fi on each site, totally several hundred pieces of equipment. All this is to be supported by Microsoft software, as well as the hospital’s own patient record system.
The project is currently in its early stages with the first hospital design having been accepted and preparations being made for the purchase of the first round of equipment. To complete the design we have used our usual UK based data expert to review the (previously supplied) outline design and enhance that into a detailed design. This included the change of some cabling from Cat 5e to Fibre Optics due to the lengths of run required. The detailed design has been peer reviewed by our selected in country installation company. This company was selected via an internal review and internet meeting. They will take the design forward for the actual installation, prior to commissioning the software and the handover.
The project so far has seen project managers based in South Africa and liaison with NMS Infrastructure staff who have done a previous project in Ghana. It is expected that our Project Manager and data expert will be travelling to Zambia to oversee the arrival of the equipment and delivery of the first hospital in the next 6 months.
This will then be followed by further hospitals in Ivory Coast and Ghana….
